President Roosevelt counting dimes with Basil O’Conner,organizer of the
March Of Dimes campaign.
The nonprofit organization March of Dimes Foundation was founded by then-
President Franklin D. Roosevelt to help combat polio. Roosevelt was himself
diagnosed with polio in 1921, and it left him unable to move his legs.
In 1956-57 Elvis Presley helped promote polio vaccinations for the
March of Dimes. He was photographed (above) with the poster girl
of the organization, Joanne Wilson. Elvis also had his polio shot.
Clayton Moore (The Lone Ranger) and Jay Silverheels (Tonto) for Christmas
Seals. They were introduced in this country by social worker and activist
Emily Bissell in 1907. She had read about the use of Christmas Seals in
Denmark to help fight tuberculosis.
