Sergeant Stubby was a stray Pit Bull/Terrier mix, that became the most decorated
war dog of World War I and the only dog to be promoted to sergeant through
combat. He served 18 months ‘over there’ and participated in seventeen battles
on the Western Front. He saved his regiment from surprise mustard gas attacks,
found and comforted the wounded, and even once caught a German spy by the
seat of his pants, holding him there until American Soldiers found him. Back home
his exploits were front page news on most major newspapers.

Stubby was wounded in the foreleg by the retreating Germans throwing hand
grenades
. He was sent to the rear for convalescence, and as he had done on
the front was able to improve morale. When he recovered from his wounds,
Stubby returned to the trenches.

Upon returning home, Stubby became a celebrity and marched in,
and normally led, many parades across the country. He met with
Presidents Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, and Warren G.
Harding.

The U.S. Air Force Academy’s permanent site, located near Colorado Springs.
Colorado, had not yet been completed when the first class entered, so the 306
cadets from the Class of 1959 were sworn in at a temporary site at Lowry Air
Force Base
, in Denver on 11 July 1955. While at Lowry, they were housed in
renovated World War II barracks. Since there were no upper class cadets to
train the new cadets, the Air Force appointed a regiment of ATOs or Air
Training Officers to conduct training.

THE ROSWELL INCIDENT ON THIS DAY IN 1947

The Roswell incident took place on Monday, July 7, 1947, when an airborne
object crashed on a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. Explanations of what
actually occurred are based on both official and unofficial reports. The most
popular theory of what took place is that the object, or UFO, was a spacecraft
containing extraterrestrial life. Since the late 1970s, the Roswell incident has
been the subject of much controversy, and conspiracy theories have arisen
about the event.

The U.S. government maintains that what was recovered near Roswell was
debris from the crash of an experimental high-altitude surveillance balloon
belonging to what was then a classified top secret program named Mogul
(see below).
