              David Sarnoff  (February 27, 1891 – December 12, 1971)

David Sarnoff  was a businessman and pioneer of commercial radio and television
and led the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and the National Broadcasting
Company throughout most most of his career until his retirement in 1970. He
was named a Reserve Brigadier General of the Signal Corps in 1945 and was
thereafter widely known as “The General.”

FIRST AIRCRAFT CARRIER LAUNCHED ON THIS DAY IN 1933

USS Ranger (CV-4) was launched at the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry dock Co., Newport News, Va.(top photo). It was the first ship of the United States Navy to be designed and built from the keel up as an aircraft carrier. She served mainly in the 
Atlantic during WWll, and carried out the only fleet carrier attack in the Atlantic
during the war. Ranger received two battle stars for her service. The ship was
decommissioned on October 18, 1946. she was sold for scrap to a Shipbuilding
and Dry dock Company in Chester, Pennsylvania on January 31, 1947.

BUREAU FOUNDED ON THIS DAY IN 1870

The National Weather Service (now the U.S. Weather Bureau) was established
on February 9, 1870 through a joint resolution of Congress signed by President
Ulysses S. Grant with a mission of providing meteorological observations at
military stations in the interior of the continent and other points in the States
and Territories”. The new agency was placed under the Secretary of War and
was then assigned to the U.S. Signal Corps under General Albert J. Myer.
