On September 17, 1983, 20-year-old Vanessa Williams became the first Black woman to win the Miss America crown. Less than a year later, on July 23, 1984, Williams gave up her crown after nude photos of her surfaced.
Despite the scandal, Williams later launched a successful singing and acting career, including a featured role on the television sitcom Ugly Betty.
ORLANDO, Fla. (TND) — Madison Marsh is a U.S. Air Force officer, a master’s student at Harvard and is now adding 2024 Miss America to her impressive resume.
She also happens to be the first active-duty servicemember to ever win the title.
Marsh, 22, graduated last year from the United States Air Force Academy with a degree in physics and is currently enrolled at Harvard pursuing her master’s in public policy.
The U.S. Air Force celebrated her win on X and called her "our very own."
