Arthur William Matthew “Art” Carney

(November 4, 1918 – November 9, 2003)

Carney was drafted into the U.S. Army as an infantryman
as a machine gun crewman during World War II
. During the
Battle of Normandy serving in the 28th Infantry Division, he
was wounded in the leg by shrapnel and walked with a limp
for the rest of his life.

SLASHER FILM ACTOR HAS DIED AT 68

Gunnar Hansen (March 4, 1947 – November 7, 2015)

Gunnar Hansen, who terrorized moviegoers as the psychotic, chainsaw-
wielding Leatherface in 1974’s “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” has died. 

According to his agent, Mike Eisenstadt, Hansen died Saturday evening of
pancreatic cancer at his home in Northeast Harbor, Maine. Eisenstadt
described Hansen’s “Chainsaw” character as “one of the most iconic evil
figures in the history of cinema.”

Hansen was born in Reykjavík, Iceland, and moved to the U.S. when he was
five. He lived in Maine until age eleven, when his family moved to Texas, where
he attended both Austin High School and the University of Texas at Austin. He
majored in English and mathematics as an undergraduate, and then went to
graduate school in Scandinavian Studies and English.

MOVIE PREMIERED ON THIS DAY IN 1963

The epic comedy film It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World was produced and
directed by Stanley Kramer and features Spencer Tracy with an all-star cast 
including Jimmy Durante, Edie Adams, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Buddy Hackett,
Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, Phil Silvers, Terry-Thomas and Jonathan
Winters
. The film marked the first time that Kramer had directed a comedy.

ACTRESS SALLY FIELD IS 69 TODAY

Sally Margaret Field is known for her film roles in Smokey and the
Bandit
(1977), Norma Rae (1979), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Forrest Gump 
(1994), and Lincoln (2012). She was a High School cheerleader in
Van Nuys, California before starring as Gidget on ABC-TV from
1965 to 1966. She also portrayed Sister Bertrille in The Flying Nun
on ABC from 1967 to 1970.
