Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (July 18, 1918 – December 5, 2013) 

Nelson Mandela was a South African revolutionary and politician who radically
changed the conditions of the Apartheid state of South Africa by addressing institutionalized racism and inequality. He served 27 years in prison and, upon
his release in 1994, he became South Africa’s first black chief executive, an
office he served for five years. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993
while he was still in prison.

Rickie Lee Skaggs is 63 years old today.

Rickie Skaggs is a country and bluegrass singer, musician, producer, and
composer. He primarily plays mandolin; however, he also plays fiddle, guitar, 
and banjo. Skaggs was born in Cordell, Kentucky. He started playing music
at age 5 after he was given a mandolin by his father,

Ginger Rogers (Virginia Katherine McMath) Independence, MO. 
(July 16, 1911 – April 25, 1995)

Ginger Rogers appeared as the dance partner of Fred Astaire in a number
of classic movie musicals, such as Top Hat, Swing Time, and The Gay
Divorce. Her classic line, "Cigarette me, big boy," in the 1930 film Young
Man of Manhattan became a much-quoted catchphrase during the 1930s.

Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire danced together in 10 movies.

Billy the Kid, born Henry McCarty; also known as William H. Bonney
(1859 – July 14, 1881)

Bonney was an outlaw who was shot and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner
on this day in 1881.

Richard Benjamin Speck (December 6, 1941 – December 5, 1991)

Speck was a mass murderer who systematically tortured, raped, and murdered
eight student nurses from South Chicago Community Hospital on this day in
1966.  He was sentenced to death, but the sentence was later overturned due
to issues with jury selection at his trial. Speck died of a heart attack after serving
25 years in prison.

The space probe Mariner 4 flew by Mars, and sent back photographs
of the planet (below) on this day in 1965.

Woodrow Wilson Guthrie (July 14, 1912 – October 3, 1967)

Singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie is regarded as one of the most
significant figures in American folk music; his songs, including social
justice songs, such as "This Land Is Your Land", have inspired several
generations both politically and musically. He wrote hundreds of political,
folk, and children’s songs, along with ballads and improvised works.

Live Aid was a charity concert, organized by Bob Geldof
and Midge Ure to raise funds for relief of the ongoing
Ethiopian famine. The event was held simultaneously at
the Wembley Stadium in London (UK) and the John F.
Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia (USA) on July 13, 1985
and was broadcasted internationally via satellite television.

On this day in 1863, opponents of the Civil War draft began three
days of rioting in New York City, which resulted in more than 1,000 casualties.

surveyor, and historian. A leading transcendentalist,
Thoreau is best known for his book Walden, a reflection
upon simple living in natural surroundings, and an essay
on "Civil Disobedience"

George Eastman (July 12, 1854 – March 14, 1932)

Eastman was an American entrepreneur who founded the Eastman Kodak 
Company and popularized the use of roll film.

Oscar Greeley Clendenning Hammerstein II
(July 12, 1895 – August 23, 1960)

Hammerstein was an American librettist, theatrical producer,
and theatre director of musicals for almost forty years. He
won eight Tony Awards and two Academy Awards for Best
Original Song. Oscar Hammerstein is best known for his
collaborations with Richard Rodgers, which include Oklahoma!
(1943)’, Carousel (1943), South Pacific (1949), The King and I,
(1951), and The Sound of Music (1959).
