Broadcast journalist Barbara Walters was a popular morning news anchor
for over 10 years on NBC’s Today, where she worked with Hugh Downs
and Frank McGee. She moved to the ABC television network in 1976
and became the first female co-anchor of the ABC Evening News,
working with Harry Reasoner until 1978.

FIRST FEMALE NIGHTLY NEWS ANCHOR ~ ON THIS DATE IN 1976
WALTER WINCHELL – BORN ON THIS DATE IN 1897
Walter Winchell (April 7, 1897 – February 20, 1972) was a vaudeville
performer at first, and later a newspaper and radio commentator. He
invented the gossip column while at the New York Evening Graphic and
soon became a syndicated columnist at the New York Daily Mirror. He
made his radio debut at WABC in New York in 1930. In 1948 Winchell
had the top rated radio show when he surpassed Fred Allen and Jack
Benny. Later during his career, Walter received $25,000 an episode
to narrate The Untouchables on ABC-TV for five seasons beginning
in 1959.
DAVID FROST IS 72 YEARS OLD TODAY
Sir David Frost, is a British journalist, comedian, writer and media personality,
is must known for his interviews with various political figures, the most famous
being Richard Nixon in August of 1977. The interviews were the most watched
in the history of television and were the subject of a play in 2006 and the 2008
Ron Howard film Frost Nixon.

Lowell Jackson Thomas (April 6, 1892 – August 29, 1981)
has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was
inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1989.
NIGHTLINE DEBUTED ON THIS DATE IN 1980
Nightline, or ABC News Nightline is a late-night news program broadcast by
ABC-TV. The original anchor was Ted Koppel (above). Ted had been the State Department news Correspondent for ABC prior to anchoring the program until his retirement in November 2005.
ABC News’ "Nightline" evolved from the ABC News special broadcasts,
"The Iran Crisis: America Held Hostage," which began November 8, 1979.
