The Bay of Pigs Invasion was an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the Cuban government of Fidel Castro by a CIA-trained force of Cuban exiles. The invasion had
the support of the U.S. government and was launched less than three months after
John F. Kennedy assumed the presidency of the United States. The main invasion took place at a beach named Playa Giron, located at the mouth of the bay (see map below). The invading combatants were defeated by Cuban armed forces within three days.

IT WAS 50 YEARS AGO ON THIS DATE IN 1961
EDDIE COCHRAN DIED ON THIS DATE IN 1960
While on a tour of London on Saturday, April 16, 1960, the taxi 21 year-old Eddie
Cochran was riding in lost control and crashed into a lamp post at about 11.50 pm. Cochran, who received head injuries when he was thrown from the vehicle, died in
the hospital at 4:10pm the following day. Songwriter Sharon Sheeley and singer
Gene Vincent, who were in the taxi with Cochran survived the crash, although
Vincent sustained lasting leg injuries that affected him for the rest of his life.
HISTORIC DISASTER AT SEA ON THIS DATE IN 1912
RMS Titanic was the largest passenger liner in the world and was owned by the White Star Line. The vessel struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City, and sank on 15 April 1912. She struck the iceberg four
days into the crossing, at 11:40 pm on 14 April 1912, and sank at 2:20 the following
morning, resulting in the deaths of 1,517 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. A total of 706 passengers survived.
WALTER WINCHELL – BORN ON THIS DATE IN 1897
Walter Winchell (April 7, 1897 – February 20, 1972) was a vaudeville
performer at first, and later a newspaper and radio commentator. He
invented the gossip column while at the New York Evening Graphic and
soon became a syndicated columnist at the New York Daily Mirror. He
made his radio debut at WABC in New York in 1930. In 1948 Winchell
had the top rated radio show when he surpassed Fred Allen and Jack
Benny. Later during his career, Walter received $25,000 an episode
to narrate The Untouchables on ABC-TV for five seasons beginning
in 1959.
RADIO SHOW DEBUTED ON THIS DATE IN 1947
The Big Story was a radio crime show on NBC which dramatized the true stories of real-life newspaper reporters. The only continuing character was the narrator, Bob Sloane.The first sponsor of the show was Pall Mall Cigarettes and Lucky Strike Cigarettes sponsored the last two years. The series aired until March 23, 1955 and was top rated, rivaling Bing Crosby’s Philco Radio Time.
