HOUSTON (AP) –  A man who became known for claiming he was the sailor
kissing a woman in Times Square in a famous World War II-era photo taken
by a Life magazine photographer has died.

Glenn McDuffie died March 9 in a nursing home in Dallas, according to his
daughter, Glenda Bell.

A mail carrier and semi-professional baseball player after he returned from
World War II, McDuffie’s life became more exciting about six years ago when
Houston Police Department forensic artist Lois Gibson was able to identify
him as the young man leaning over the woman in his arms to kiss her.

People
(originally called People Weekly) is a weekly magazine of celebrity
and human-interest stories, published by Time Inc. The concept for People
has been attributed to Andrew Heiskell, Time, Inc.’s chief executive officer
at the time and the former publisher of the weekly Life magazine.

The magazine’s headquarters are in New York, and it maintains editorial
bureaus in Los Angeles and in London. People is perhaps best known for
its yearly special issues naming "World’s Most Beautiful People", "Best &
Worst Dressed", and  "Sexiest Man Alive".

THE BACKGROUND ON A FAMOUS PHOTO

chuck o'rear

Chuck O’Rear with a copy of his ‘Bliss’ photo in the area where it was shot

Former National Geographic magazine photographer Chuck O’Rear was driving
to see his girlfriend when he was struck by the beauty of the rolling vineyards in
Sonoma, Napa, California. He stopped, got out his camera and snapped what
would become the most viewed image in the world. It was chosen by engineers
at Microsoft as the desktop image for their Windows XP background.

He can’t say how much he got paid for the rights to the photo, but it is reportedly
the second most expensive photo license ever purchased.

O’Rear now specializes in photographing winemaking in the Napa, California area
and around the world.
