REACHING MERCURY ON THIS DAY IN 1974

The space probe Mariner 10 became the first spacecraft to reach the planet
Mercury. It had been launched on November 3, 1973.The first encounter took
place at a range of 437 miles, passing on the shadow side of the planet. The
probe flew by Mercury again on September 21, 1974. Mariner 10 is still orbiting
the Sun, although its electronics have probably been damaged by the Sun’s
radiation.

THE BROWNIE DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1900

The Eastman Kodak Brownie a long-running popular series of simple and
inexpensive cameras. The camera was first introduced on February 1, 1900.It
was a basic cardboard box camera with a simple optical lens that took 21/4-inch
square pictures on 117 roll film. The Brownie was a camera anyone could own
and use with its simple controls and initial price tag of $1. The camera was
named after the popular cartoons created by Palmer Cox.
