Jim Backus was a radio, television, film, and voice actor. Among his most
remembered roles… the voice of Mr. Magoo, Joan Davis’s husband on
TV’s I married Joan, and Thurston Howell, lll on the CBS-TV hit sitcom
Gilligan’s Island (1964 – 1967). Jim died on July 3, 1989. He was 76.

RADIO SHOW SIMULCAST FOR FIRST TIME ON THIS DATE IN 1954
The Breakfast Club was a long-run morning variety show on NBC Blue Network/ABC radio originating in Chicago, Illinois. Hosted by Don McNeill (shown above).The radio program ran from June 23, 1933 through December 27, 1968. McNeill’s 35½-year run
as host remains the longest tenure for an emcee of a network entertainment program, surpassing Johnny Carson (29½ years) on The Tonight Show and Bob Barker (34⅔ years) on The Price is Right. For one year, beginning on February 22, 1954, the show
was simulcast on ABC radio and television, ending on February 25, 1955.

SUPERMAN RADIO DEBUT ON THIS DATE IN 1940
The Adventures of Superman was a long running radio serial adapted from
the DC Comics character that originally aired from 1940 to 1951. It began as
a syndicated show on New York City’s WOR. The Serial went to the Mutual
network from August 31, 1942, to February 4, 1949 as a 15-minute show,
usually running three or five times a week. Superman was picked up by
the ABC radio network in October of 1949, returning to afternoon air
time twice a week until March 1, 1951. Bud Collyer played the title
role with Joan Alexander playing Lois Lane, both pictured below.

That well known signature opening of Superman, one
of the most famous in radio history, was delivered by
Jackson Beck (above), the announcer-narrator of the
show from 1943 to 1950.

SINATRA’S RADIO DEBUT ON THIS DATE IN 1943
ANCHOR DEBUT ON THIS DATE IN 1965
Peter Jennings started his career early, hosting a Canadian radio
show at the age of nine. In 1965, ABC News tapped him to anchor its
flagship evening news program. In 1968 Jennings became a foreign
correspondent. He returned to ABC’s World News Tonight as sole
anchor until his death in 2005 of complications from lung cancer. He
was 67.
