Germany signed unconditional surrender ending World War II on
this day in 1945. It would take effect the next day.

On this day in 1954, French Colonial Forces surrendered to the
Viet Minh at Dien Bien Phu after 55 days of fighting.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (May 7, 1840 – November 6, 1893)  

Tchaikovsky is famous for composing "The Nutcracker" ballet, as
well as numerous symphonies, concertos, operas, ballets, and
chamber-music pieces, he’s remembered as one of classical
music’s most popular composers. He began taking piano lessons
when he was five and was able to read music at the same level as
his first piano teacher in only three years.

Gene Vincent recorded "Be-Bop-A Lula" at Owen Bradley’s
studio in Nashville, TN. The song was released in June 1956
and immediately sold well. It was successful on three singles
charts: it peaked at No. 7 on the US Billboard pop music chart,
No. 8 on the R&B chart, and also made the top ten on the C&W
Best Seller chart peaking at No. 5.
 

The single, "Jailhouse Rock" spent one week at the top of the country
charts, and reached the number one position on the R&B chart. The
B-side "Treat Me Nice" (another song from the “Jailhouse Rock” movie
soundtrack) was a number-one hit for seven weeks in the fall of 1957.

Gene Autry recorded "Back in the Saddle Again" in Los Angeles
for Columbia Record Corporation.

In addition to being used as the theme for Autry’s radio program, Gene
Autry’s Melody Ranch, "Back in the Saddle Again" was also used for
The Gene Autry Show on television as well as for personal appearances.

The 1993 film Sleepless in Seattle included "Back in the Saddle Again"
as one of "a number of standards" heard in its soundtrack.

(September 29, 1907 – October 2, 1998)

Buddy Holly and the Crickets recorded "That’ll Be The Day"
in the Norman Petty Recording Studio, Clovis, New Mexico.

The song would be their first hit.  A previously recorded
version, on July 22, 1956, was produced poorly and the
vocals were performed differently.
