HISTORIC JFK SPEECH ON THIS DAY IN 1961
LONGEST SPEECH ENDED ON THIS DAY IN 1953
While an independent, Oregon Senator Wayne L. Morse set a record at the time
for delivering the longest one-person filibuster in the history of the U.S. Senate,
22 hours and 26 minutes. He was protesting a bill for the Tidelands offshore oil legislation.
AN OLD SOLDIER DIED ON THIS DAY IN 1964
General of the Army Douglas MacArthur (26 January 1880 – 5 April 1964)
Douglas MacArthur was a general and field marshal of the Philippine army and
was also Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army during the 1930s. He played a prominent
role in the Pacific Theater during World War ll. MacArthur was one of only five
men ever to be promoted to the rank of General of the Army. He received the
Medal of Honor for his service in the Philippines Campaign.

THE MARSHALL PLAN SIGNED ON THIS DAY IN 1948
President Harry Truman signed into law the Economic Recovery
Program, also known as the Marshall Plan, which would provide
over $13 billion in aid to post-war Europe.
