TEAM SPORT INVENTED ON THIS DAY IN 1895

volleyball-3

On February 9, 1895, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, YMCA physical education
director, William G. Morgan created a new game called Mintonette, which
would later be called volleyball. It was played preferably indoors by any
number of players. The game took some of its characteristics from tennis,
handball, and another indoor sport that was catching on at the same time,
called basketball.

The first official ball used in volleyball is disputed, some sources say that
Spalding created the first official ball in 1896, while others claim it was in
1900.

Gatorade thirst quencher is a brand of sports drink currently manufactured
by PepsiCo that is distributed in over 80 countries. It was first developed
in 1965 by researchers at the University of Florida, to replenish the
combination of water, carbohydrates, and electrolytes the school’s
athletes lost while sweating during rigorous competitions. The name
was derived from nickname of the university’s athletic teams, the
“Gators”, The drink was originally produced and marketed by Stokely-
Van Camp.
