KENNEDY/NIXON DEBATE ON THIS DAY IN 1960

Richard Nixon; John F. Kennedy; Howard K. Smith

Presidential candidates Sen. John Kennedy, left, and Vice President Richard Nixon face each other in a Chicago television studio as they debated. In center is Howard K. Smith, moderator. Four members of
the panel are in foreground.

For the first time in U.S. history, a debate between major party presidential candidates is shown on television. The presidential hopefuls, John F.
Kennedy
, a Democratic senator of Massachusetts, and Richard M. Nixon,
the vice president of the United States, met in a
Chicago studio to discuss
U.S. domestic matters. Kennedy emerged the apparent winner from this
first of four televised debates.

TRAGEDY IN CHICAGO ON THIS DAY IN 1979

One of the biggest stories in Chicago was the crash of American Airlines
Flight 191.

American Airlines Flight 191 from O’Hare International Airport in Chicago to
Los Angeles International Airport crashed moments after takeoff from the
airport. All 258 passengers and 13 crew on board the DC-10 were killed,
along with two people on the ground. Until the September 11 attacks, it was
the deadliest air disaster in the history of the United States.
