On January 11, 1922, 14-year-old Leonard Thompson becomes
the
first person to receive an injection of the hormone insulin
for Type-1 diabetes—a disease that for millennia had been
considered a death sentence for anyone who developed it.
Thompson’s blood sugar levels stabilized and he suffered
no ill side effects. He became the face of a new wonder drug.

The breakthrough research behind insulin came at the
University of Toronto in the
summer of 1921, when
Canadians Frederick Banting and Charles Best
successfully isolated insulin from canine test
subjects,

The breakthrough would be one of the most consequential
in medical history, saving millions of lives.

MOBIL PHONE INTRODUCED ON THIS DAY

Macworld 2007: Steve Jobs introduces the very first iPhone

On January 9, 2007, Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the
iPhone
—a touchscreen mobile phone with an iPod, camera
and Web-browsing capabilities, among other features—at
the Macworld convention in
San Francisco.

Jobs called the iPhone a “revolutionary and magical product
that is literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone.”

When it went on sale in the United States six months later, on
June 29, amidst huge hype, thousands of customers lined up
at Apple stores across the country to be among the first to
purchase an iPhone.

The iPhone helped turned Apple, which Jobs (1955-2011) co-
founded with his friend Stephen Wozniak in California in 1976,
into one of the planet’s most valuable corporations.
