On January 15, 2009, a potential disaster turned into a heroic
display of skill and composure when Captain Chesley Burnett Sullenberger III safely landed the plane he was piloting on
New
York City
’s Hudson River after a bird strike caused its engines
to fail. David Paterson, governor of New York at the time, dubbed
the incident the “miracle on the Hudson.”

Sullenberger, a former Air Force fighter pilot with decades of
flying experience, received a slew of honors for his actions,
including an invitation to
Barack Obama’s presidential
inauguration and resolutions of praise from the U.S.
Congress.

TREATY ENDED THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

On January 14, 1784, the Continental Congress ratified the Treaty
of Paris
(above), ending the War for Independence.

In the document, which was known as the Second Treaty of Paris because the Treaty of Paris was also the name of the agreement
that had ended the
Seven Years’ War in 1763, Britain officially
agreed to recognize the independence of its
13 former colonies
as the new United States of America.

In addition, the treaty settled the boundaries between the United
States and what remained of British North America.
