X-RAYS DISCOVERED ON THIS DAY IN 1895

On November 8, 1895, physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen
(1845-1923) became the first person to observe X-rays, a
significant scientific advancement that would ultimately
benefit a variety of fields, most of all medicine, by making
the invisible visible.

Röntgen’s discovery occurred accidentally in his Wurzburg,
Germany, lab, where he was testing whether cathode rays
could pass through glass when he noticed a glow coming
from a nearby chemically coated screen. He dubbed the rays
that caused this glow X-rays because of their unknown nature.

FIRST COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAME IN 1869

1869 (Photo:
Special Collections and University Archives)

On November 6, 1869, Rutgers beat Princeton, 6-4, in the first
college football game. The game, played with a soccer ball before roughly 100 fans in New Brunswick, New Jersey,
resembled rugby instead of today’s football.

Even off the playing fields, the rivalry between the New Jersey
schools, located 20 miles apart, was heated. At the time,
Princeton was known as the College of New Jersey.

NIXON IS ELECTED PRESIDENT ON THIS DAY

See the source image

Winning one of the closest elections in U.S. history, Republican challenger Richard Nixon defeated Vice President Hubert
Humphrey
November 5, 1968. Because of the strong showing
of
third-party candidate George Wallace, neither Nixon nor
Humphrey received more
than 50 percent of the popular vote;
Nixon beat Humphrey by less than 500,000 votes.

Nixon campaigned on a platform designed to reach the “silent
majority”
of middle class and working class Americans. He
promised to “bring us together again,” and many Americans,
weary after years of
antiwar and civil rights protests, were
happy to hear of peace returning to their streets. Foreign
policy was also a major factor in the election.
