This song was written following a trip to the movies by Buddy Holly,
Jerry Allison and Sonny Curtis in June of 1956. The John Wayne film
The Searchers was playing at the time. Wayne’s frequently-used
catchphrase, “That’ll be the day” inspired the young musicians.
Vincent Leonard Price, Jr. was a actor, well known for his roles in horror
films. His first venture into the genre was in the 1939 Boris Karloff film
Tower of London.
The longest-running and best known radio incarnation of Simon Templar
as The Saint was Vincent Price, who played the character in a long-running
series that was broadcast between 1947 and 1951 on no fewer than three
networks: CBS, Mutual and NBC. After Price left the series in May 1951, he
was replaced by Tom Conway.
A chain, in place of a ribbon, was cut at the opening ceremonies of the Golden Gate bridge.
Construction of the Golden Gate bridge began on January 5, 1933 under the Works Projects Administration (WPA), a program initiated by Franklin D. Roosevelt during
the Great Depression. It was completed in April 1937 and opened to pedestrians on
May 27 of that year. An estimated 200,000 people crossed. The next day, President Roosevelt pushed a button in Washington, D.C. signaling the start of vehicle traffic
over the Bridge. The cost to build it was $35 million.
