The first Academy Award ceremony was held (above) at the Hotel Roosevelt
in Hollywood to honor outstanding film achievements for the 1927/1928 film
season. Tickets cost $10 to attend and the ceremony lasted a total of five
minutes. There were 15 awards vs. 25 today.

Douglas Fairbanks with Janet Gaynor who received the first award for
best performances among actresses in Seventh Heaven, Sunrise and
The Street Angel.
