When J. Edgar Hoover was chosen to lead the Bureau of Investigation, it was
the beginning a legendary 48-year tenure. He is credited with building the FBI
into the crime fighting agency it is today. Hoover remained director until his
death in 1972. Late in life, and after his death, J. Edgar Hoover became an
increasingly controversial figure
