The Bobbettes’ first and only Top 40 single, "Mr. Lee" entered the US Pop charts
where it will reach #6. It spent four weeks at #1 on the R&B chart. This made the Bobbettes the first girl group to release a #1 R&B hit that also made the pop
Top 10. The group, which originally formed in Spanish Harlem, New York, in
1955, was first known as "The Harlem Queens".

FIRST RECORD HITS CHART ON THIS DATE IN 1957
GRACIE ALLEN
Gracie Allen, was a comedian who became internationally famous as the zany
partner and comic foil of husband George Burns. The Burns and Allen radio
show began in the early 1930s. They made the move to television and the CBS
network, October 12, 1950. The show was an immediate success.
NATIONAL SECURITY ACT SIGNED ON THIS DATE IN 1947
The National Security Act of 1947 was signed by U.S. President Harry S. Truman
(shown above) on July 26, 1947. It created the National Security Council, the
Department of Defense, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Joint Chiefs of
Staff in the aftermath of World War ll.
“THE BAMBINO’S’’ LAST PUBLIC APPEARANCE
On July 26, 1948, famed New York Yankees slugger Babe Ruth attended the premier
of the film The Babe Ruth Story, a biopic about his own life, William Bendix (below)
portrayed Ruth. Shortly thereafter, Ruth returned to the hospital for the final time. He
was barely able to speak. His condition gradually became worse, and in his last days, scores of reporters and photographers hovered around the hospital. On August 16,
Babe Ruth died at the age of 53 due to pneumonia.

U.S. POST OFFICE WAS ESTABLISHED ON THIS DATE IN 1775
The United States Post Office (USPO) was created in Philadelphia under
Benjamin Franklin on Wednesday, July 26, 1775, by decree of the Second
Continental Congress. It became the Post Office Department (USPOD) in
1792. Until 1971, it was part of the Presidential cabinet.
