Howard Andrew "Andy" Williams has recorded 18 Gold and three Platinum-
certified albums. He hosted The Andy Williams Show on television from 1959
to 1971 on CBS and later on NBC, as well as numerous TV specials, and owns
his own theater, the Moon River Theatre in Branson, Missouri, named after his
popular hit song “Moon River”.

PROBE REACHED JUPITER ON THIS DAY IN 1973

pioneer 10

Pioneer 10  is a robotic space probe launched on March 2, 1972 by an Atlas rocket
from Cape Canaveral, Florida and reached it’s destination on Dec. 3, 1973. This was
the completion of the first interplanetary mission to Jupiter, and became the first spacecraft to achieve escape velocity from the Solar System. During the mission, the planets asteroid belt was studied by on-board instruments along with the environment around Jupiter, solar wind, cosmic rays were also studied by the probe. Communication has been lost since January 23, 2003 because of power constraints due to its distance from Earth.

King Camp Gillette

King Camp Gillette (January 5, 1855 – July 9, 1932) was a businessman
widely known as the inventor of the safety razor, although several models
were in existence prior to Gillette’s design. Gillette’s innovation was the thin,
inexpensive, disposable blade of stamped steel.

THE BERKLEY SIT-IN OF 1964

Thousands in the Berkeley Free Speech Movement gathered on the steps of Sproul
Hall, the administration building at the University of California campus to protest four students being disciplined for distributing political literature. The leader of the orderly
sit-in was Mario Savio, seen below delivering his famous speech. Joan Baez was
there to lead in the singing, and to lend moral support. Shortly after 2 am on Dec. 
4th, police cordoned off the building, and at 3:30 am began arresting close to 800 students.
