people on board (36 passengers, 61 crew), there were 36 total 
fatalities, including one death among the ground crew.

Welles was an actor, director, writer and producer who worked extensively in
theater, radio and film. He is best remembered for his debut of the
Mercury
Theatre
; The War of the Worlds (1938), the most famous broadcast in the
history of radio; and Citizen Kane (1941), which many critics and scholars
name as the best film of all time.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law a stronger, more protective Civil
Rights Act dealing with discriminatory laws and practices in the segregated South,
by which blacks had been deprived of the right to register and vote. It served to
eliminate certain loopholes created by the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
