On October 4, 1927, the carving process began on Mount Rushmore National 
Memorial in the solid granite Black Hills of South Dakota.The face of Abraham 
Lincoln was dedicated on September 17, 1937. Work on the massive sculpture, 
one of the largest ever completed, continued until October 1941.

M*A*S*H is a CBS television series developed by Larry Gelbart, adapted
from the 1970 feature film MASH, which was itself based on the 1968 novel
MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors, by Richard Hooker. Many of the
stories in the early seasons are based on real-life tales told by real MASH
surgeons who were interviewed by the production team. In 2002, M*A*S*H
was ranked number 25 on TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time.

SAFETY MESSAGE MADE ON THIS DAY IN 1955

James Dean in his Porsche 550 Spyder,

Actor James Dean made a public information film for TV, during the filming
of the movie “Giant”, urging teenagers to drive safely. At the end of the
month he would be killed in a high speed car crash with his Porsche.

COMPANY FOUNDED ON THIS DAY IN 1908

General Motors Company (GM) was founded in Flint, Michigan as a holding 
company for Buick, controlled then by William C. Durant who was a leading
manufacturer of horse-drawn vehicles. GM’s co-founder was Charles S. 
Mott, whose carriage company was merged into Buick prior to GM’s 
creation.
