WHAT NO OTHER SYSTEM CAN DO!
RECORD BROKEN ON THIS DAY IN 1922
Competition swimmer and actor Johnny Weissmuller broke the world record
for 100-meter freestyle swimming set by Duke Kahanamoku‘s of Hawaii and
became the first person to swim the competition, held at Neptune Beach in
Alameda, in under one minute with a time of 58.6 seconds.

ED AMES IS 86 YEARS OLD TODAY
Ames is best known for his pop and adult contemporary hits of
the 1960s such as "My Cup Runneth Over". He was part of a
popular 1950s singing group called the Ames Brothers.

NEW BANDSTAND HOST ON THIS DAY IN 1956
Dick Clark made his debut as permanent host of "Bandstand" on Philadelphia TV
station WFIL when original host Bob Horn was arrested for driving while intoxicated
and was subsequently fired by the station. Clark had been a disc jockey on WFIL
radio and had substituted for Horn when he went on vacation. The name of the
show was changed to "American Bandstand" in August of 1957 when it went
national to ABC-TV.
