SERIES DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1949
Robert Young and Jean Vander Pyl
The comedy series Father Knows Best began on NBC Radio. Set in the Midwest,
it starred Robert Young as the General Insurance agent Jim Anderson. His wife
Margaret was first portrayed by June Whitley and later by Jean Vander Pyl. The
Anderson children were Betty (Rhonda Williams), Bud (Ted Donaldson), and
Kathy (Norma Jean Nillson).The program was sponsored through most of its
run by General Foods and was heard Thursday evenings until March 25,
1954. It made the transition to television that same year.

English singer-songwriter Elvis Costello began his career as part of London’s
pub rock scene in the early 1970s. He is referred to by some critics as being
a pop encyclopedia, for his ability to mimic all kinds of musical styles.
THE PGA IN PORTLAND ON THIS DAY IN 1946
Ben Hogan won the 28th PGA Championship held in Portland, Oregon. For Hogan,
age 34, it was his first of nine major golf titles. His winning share was $3,500.
