SINGER KAY STARR IS 92 TODAY
Kay Starr was born Katherine Laverne Starks in Dougherty, Oklahoma
Pop and jazz vocalist Kay Starr sang the 1952 best seller, “Wheel of Fortune”
and the 1956 hit "The Rock and Roll Waltz” along many other #1 singles. She
was making $3 a performance during the Great Depression when she was ten
years old.
FORMER OREGON GOVERNOR IS DEAD AT 91
Victor George Atiyeh (February 20, 1923 – July 20, 2014)
The 32nd Governor of Oregon died this evening of renal failure at a hospital
in Portland, after a fall sustained at his home on July 5. Vic Atiyeh served as
governor for eight years from 1979 through 1987. As of this year, Atiyeh is
the last Republican to serve as governor of Oregon.
VETERAN ACTOR IS DEAD AT 86
James Garner (James Scott Bumgarner; April 7, 1928 – July 19, 2014)
Garner was an award-winning American film and television actor. He starred
in several television series spanning a career of more than five decades
which included such popular roles as Bret Maverick in the 1950s western–
comedy series, Maverick, and Jim Rockford in the 1970s detective drama,
The Rockford Files.
According to police, an ambulance was dispatched to Garner’s Brentwood,
Los Angeles home at around 8 p.m. on July 19, 2014. Garner was confirmed
dead when paramedics arrived at his home. The cause of death was not
immediately reported but initial law enforcement officers on the scene
declared "natural causes" as the cause of death.
