The first MDA Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon was held the weekend of
September 4 and 5, 1966 and was broadcast by a single station in New
York (WNEW-TV). The telecast was such a success that the Association
selected Labor Day weekend for all future Telethons.
Then, with help from broadcasting icons Sylvester “Pat” Weaver and
Robert M. Bennett, the Association created a “Love Network” of stations
that in 1971 facilitated the nation’s first networked Telethon.
Since 1966, the MDA Labor Day Telethon has had a variety of names,
including the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, “The” Telethon and Stars Across
America!.
The popular Labor Day weekend show has originated from New York, Las
Vegas and Hollywood. Now broadcast by more than 150 television stations,
the annual telecast has frequently included live remote segments.
On May 16, 2011, Jerry Lewis announced that he was retiring as host of the
annual MDA Labor Day Telethon.

Oregon for 31 years.

BERLIN (AP) – Werner Franz, believed to be the last surviving
crew member of the German airship Hindenburg that crashed
77 years ago, died of heart failure August 13 in his hometown
of Frankfurt, Germany.
Franz was a 14-year-old cabin boy when the hydrogen-filled
Zeppelin caught fire and crashed in Lakehurst, New Jersey,
on May 6, 1937.
The sole living survivor of the Hindenburg crash is now Werner
Doehner, who was an 8 year old passenger traveling with his
family.
Margaret Ann "Peggy" Lipton was born in New York City, New York
Lipton played undercover cop and flower child Julie Barnes on the ABC-TV
series The Mod Squad (1968-1973).
Before fame,Peggy Lipton modeled with the Ford Modeling Agency and
later moved to Los Angeles in 1964, signing a film contract with Universal
Pictures.
