SERIES DEBUT ON THIS DAY IN 1964

The musical variety series "Shindig!" premiered on ABC-TV. The first
show, which was also the pilot, opened with Sam Cooke, The Everly
Brothers, The Wellingtons, The Righteous Brothers, Bobby Sherman
and Alan Sues. The show aired until January 8, 1966.

The show was hosted by Jimmy O’Neill,
a disc jockey in Los Angeles at the time.

FEMALE ORDAINED ON THIS DAY IN 1853

Antoinette Louisa Brown (later Antoinette Brown Blackwell)
(May 20, 1825 – November 5, 1921)

Reverend Blackwell was the first woman to be ordained as a mainstream
Protestant minister in the United States. She distinguished herself from 
her contemporaries with her use of religious faith in her efforts to expand
women’s rights. Blackwell founded the Association for the Advancement
of Women in 1873. In 1888 she was elected as a delegate to a hearing
of the International Council of Women.

William Oliver Stone is 69 years old today.

As a teenager, Stone worked in the French Financial
Exchange. He then went into the U.S. Army and served
in Vietnam from June 1965 to 1968.

Roy Claxton Acuff
(September 15, 1903 – November 23, 1992)

Roy Acuff was a country music singer, fiddler, and promoter,
known as the "King of Country Music," He was the first living
artist to be elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Acuff began his music career in the 1930s, gaining regional
fame as the singer and fiddler for his group, the Smoky
Mountain Boys. He joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1938.
