SINGLE RECORDED ON THIS DAY IN 1963

The song “Surf City’ was released in May of 1963 and two months later
became the first surf song to reach number one on national record charts,
remaining at the top of Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks. The single also
crossed over to the Billboard R&B Chart where it peaked at number 3.

sold for $7,770.00.

Titus van Rijn was born in Amsterdam on September 22, 1641, the
fourth child of the famed artist Rembrandt van Rijn and his wife
Saskia van Uylenburgh. Titus is best known as a figure or model
in his father’s paintings and studies. He died in 1668 and was
buried in the Westerkerk in Amsterdam.

Students at Howard University, a historically Black college, located in Washington, D.C., seized the administration building. The sit-in lasted
five days and led to campus reform and the establishment of the Afro-
American studies curriculum. In all, more than 100 students stood in
solidarity.
