FIRST CORVETTE ASSEMBLED ON THIS DAY

See the source image

On June 28, 1953, workers at a Chevrolet plant in Flint, Michigan, assembled
the first Corvette, a two-seater sports car that would become an American
icon. The first completed production car rolled off the assembly line two
days later, one of just 300 Corvettes made that year.

The idea for the vehicle originated with General Motors’ pioneering designer Harley J. Earl, who in 1951 began developing plans for a
low-cost American sports car that could compete with Europe’s
MGs, Jaguars and Ferraris.

On June 27, 1950, President
Harry S. Truman (above) announced
he is ordering U.S. air and naval forces to
South Korea to aid the democratic nation in repulsing an invasion by communist North
Korea
. The United States was undertaking the major military
operation, he explained, to enforce a United Nations resolution
calling for an end to hostilities, and to stem the spread of
communism in Asia. In addition to ordering U.S. forces to Korea,

Truman also deployed the U.S. 7th Fleet to Formosa (Taiwan) to
guard against invasion by communist China and ordered an
acceleration of military aid to French forces fighting communist guerrillas in Vietnam.

(This note may just ‘’scratch’’ the surface!)

Mosquitoes are members of a group of about 3,500
species of small
flies within the family Culicidae (from the Latin culex meaning
"
gnat"). The word "mosquito" (formed by mosca and diminutive -ito)
is Spanish for "little
fly".
