TWO CONCORDES TOOK OFF ON THIS DAY

Avengers in Time: 1976, News: The First Commercial Flight of the Concorde

From London’s Heathrow Airport and Orly Airport outside Paris,
the first Concordes with
commercial passengers simultaneously
take flight on January 21, 1976. The London flight was headed to
Bahrain in the Persian Gulf, and the Paris to Rio de Janeiro via
Senegal in West Africa. At their cruising speeds, the innovative Concordes flew well over the sound barrier at 1,350 miles an
hour, cutting air travel time by more than half.

Buzz Aldrin Opens Up on Space Travel, Mars and Depression

Apollo 11 astronaut Edwin Eugene "Buzz" Aldrin Jr., who
reimagined the potential of human achievement before a
worldwide audience when he walked on the moon, was
born on this day in history, Jan. 20, 1930.

"The sky is not the limit … There are footprints on the
Moon!" the explorer enthused in his 2016 book, "No
Dream Is Too High: Life Lessons From a Man Who
Walked on the Moon." The second person to walk on
the Moon
is 94 years old today.

Shangri-Las lead singer Mary Weiss dies aged 75

Mary Weiss, the lead singer of 1960s pop group The Shangri-Las,
has died at the age of 75.

The female group rose to stardom with a run of hit songs about
teenage love and tragedy, including “Remember (Walking In The
Sand)” and “Leader Of The Pack”, which was later inducted into
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s singles category.

Mary vanished from the music scene for decades, returning in
2007 to record her first solo album with
Norton Records.

The announcement of her death, made on Friday, did not disclose
the cause.

In 2019, the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland,
Ohio honored the Shangri-Las’ "Leader of the Pack",
on which Weiss sang lead, in its Singles category.
