from Britain was adopted by the Continental Congress.

On this day in 1964, U.S. President Johnson signed the "Civil Rights
Act of 1964" into law. The act made it illegal in the United states to discriminate against others because of their race.

On this day in 1937, American aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart disappeared in the Central Pacific during an attempt to fly around
the world at the equator.

On this day in 1881, Charles J. Guiteau (below) fatally wounded U.S. 
President James A. Garfield in Washington, DC.

James Maitland Stewart (May 20, 1908 – July 2, 1997)

Stewart was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning
one in competition for The Philadelphia Story (1940), and
received an Academy Lifetime Achievement award in 1985.

In 1999, Stewart was named the third-greatest male screen
legend of the Golden Age of Hollywood by the American
Film Institute. The Institute has also named five of his
films to its list of the 100 best American films ever made.

On this day in 1937, the German airship Hindenburg crashed and
burned in Lakehurst, NJ. Thirty-six people, of the 97 on board,
were killed.

Japanese troops landing on Corregidor.

On this day in 1942, during World War II, Japanese military seized
control of the Philippines. About 15,000 Americans and Filipinos
on Corregidor surrendered to the Japanese.

Mark Twain was lauded as the "greatest humorist this country has produced",
and William Faulkner called him "the father of American literature".

Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary) is 92 today.

The Queen celebrates two birthdays each year, her actual birthday on April
21 and her official birthday usually on the second Saturday in June. This
year that official birthday will fall on Saturday, June 9.

The musical "Annie" opened on Broadway on this day in 1977.

"The Red Baron," was shot down and killed during World War I.

troops were later convicted of manslaughter.

The senseless killing of a black man, Crispus Attucks (above) and 
his compatriots spurred one of the most significant revolutions in modern history.

Winston Churchill delivered his "Iron Curtain Speech" on this day in 1946. He warned of the Soviet Unions growing influence in Eastern
Europe after WW 2.

Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin died on this day in 1952. He had been
in power for 29 years.

John Adam Belushi (January 24, 1949 – March 5, 1982)

The comedians death was investigated by forensic pathologist Michael Baden,
among others, and, while the findings were disputed, it was officially ruled
a drug-related accident.

Hawkins died in a plane crash near Nashville, TN. on
this day in 1963.

On this day in 1965, Malcolm X was assassinated in New York City at
the age of 39 by assassins identified as Black Muslims.

It was on this day in 1972.

In Baton Rouge, LA, on this day in 1988, TV evangelist Jimmy
Swaggart confessed to his congregation that he was guilty
of unspecified sin. He announced that he was leaving the
pulpit temporarily. Swaggart had been linked to an admitted
prostitute.        

Jimmy Lee Swaggart will be 82 years old on March 15.

Chicago stockbroker Steve Fossett became the first person to fly
solo across the Pacific Ocean in a balloon on this day in 1995. He
landed in Leader, Saskatchewan, Canada.
