On this day in 1979. Iranian militants seized the U.S. embassy in
Tehran and took 63 Americans hostage (90 total hostages). The
militants, mostly students, demanded that the U.S. send the
former shah back to Iran to stand trial. Many hostages were
later released, but 52 were held for the next 14 months.

On this day in 1948, Harry S. Truman defeated Thomas E. Dewey for
the
U.S. presidency. The Chicago Tribune published an early edition
that had the headline "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN." The Truman
victory surprised many polls and newspapers.

On this day in 1945, Howard Hughes flew his "Spruce Goose," a huge wooden airplane, for eight minutes in California. It was the plane’s
first and only flight and never went into production.

The 300,000 pound H-4 Hercules (aka “Spruce Goose”) kicks up a wake as its eight engines attempt to lift off from Long Beach (California) Harbor on its one and only flight, November 2, 1947—more than two years after the war.

On this day in 2001, President George W. Bush signed the USA
PATRIOT Act, an anti-terrorism law drawn up in response to the
9/11 attacks. Its intent, in Bush’s words, is to “enhance the
penalties that will fall on terrorists or anyone who helps them.”

The "Gunfight at the OK Corral" took place in Tombstone, AZ. The
fight was between Wyatt Earp, his two brothers and Doc Holiday
and the Ike Clanton Gang. It occurred around 3pm on the afternoon
of Wednesday 26 October 1881 and only lasted about 30 seconds.

The bodies of, from left to right, Tom McLaury (or McLowry), Frank McLaury (or McLowry) and Billy Clanton.
