CANCER TOOK THE LIFE OF ROGER MARIS

Roger Eugene Maris was a professional baseball right fielder
who played 12 seasons in
Major League Baseball. He is best
known for setting a new
MLB single-season home run record
with 61
home runs in 1961.

Maris was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 1983. In
response, Maris organized the annual Roger Maris Celebrity
Golf Tournament to raise money for cancer research and
treatment.

He died of the disease at age 51 on December 14, 1985, at M.D.
Anderson Hospital
in Houston, Texas and was buried at Holy
Cross Cemetery in Fargo, North Dakota.

George Harrison (25 February 1943 – 29 November 2001) was
an English musician, singer and songwriter who achieved
international fame as the lead guitarist of
the Beatles.

In May 2001, it was revealed that Harrison had undergone an
operation to remove a cancerous growth from one of his lungs.

In November 2001, Harrison began radiotherapy at Staten
Island University Hospital
in New York City for nonsmall
cell lung
cancer that had spread to his brain. He died in
Beverly Hills, California with his second wife Olivia and
their son Dhani by his side. He was 58 years old.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Former Portland Trail Blazers legend Bill         
Walton lost his battle with cancer.

Walton rose to fame as part of the team that brought Portland its
only NBA Championship in 1977.

Blazer Coach Jack Ramsay, in 2010, called Walton the best Portland
Trail Blazer, "hands down no question."

After his retirement as a player, Walton became a basketball color commentator.

In 2001, Walton received an Emmy Award for "Best Live sports
Television Broadcast."

Dickey Betts died Thursday from cancer and chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease
.

A statement said…"The legendary performer, songwriter,
bandleader and family patriarch was at his home in Osprey,
FL., surrounded by his family. Dickey was larger than life,
and his loss will be felt world-wide."
