Chicago stockbroker Steve Fossett became the first person to fly
solo across the Pacific Ocean in a balloon on this day in 1995. He
landed in Leader, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth President of the United
States who led the country through the horrific American
Civil War. He also helped abolish slavery with the 13th
amendment.

Charles Darwin was an English naturalist, geologist and
biologist, best known for his contributions to the science
of evolution.

On this day in 1999, United States President Clinton was acquitted by       
the U.S. Senate on two impeachment articles. The charges were     
lying under oath to a federal grand jury and obstructing justice. He

Charles Monroe Schulz (November 26, 1922 – February 12, 2000)

Charles Schulz was a cartoonist best known for the comic strip Peanuts
which featured the characters Charlie Brown and Snoopy, among others. He
is widely regarded as one of the most influential cartoonists of all time, cited
as a major influence by many later cartoonists, including Jim Davis, Bill
Watterson, and Matt Groening.

Beckwith was convicted in Jackson, MS, of the
1963 murder of civil rights leader Medgar Evers

Burroughs was a writer and artist, a primary figure of the
Beat Generation and a major postmodernist author whose
influence is considered to have affected a range of popular
culture as well as literature. He wrote eighteen novels and
novellas, six collections of short stories and four collections
of essays.

show television series hosted by the Smothers Brothers (below)
and initially airing on CBS from on this day in 1967 to 1969.

Henry Louis Aaron is 84 years old today.

Hank Aaron, nicknamed "Hammer" or "Hammerin’ Hank", is a retired
American Major League Baseball right fielder who is currently the senior
vice president of the Atlanta Braves. He played 21 seasons for the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves in the National League (NL) and two seasons
for the Milwaukee Brewers in the American League, from 1954 through
1976. Aaron held the MLB record for career home runs for 33 years, and
he still holds several MLB offensive records. He hit 24 or more home runs
every year from 1955 through 1973, and is one of only two players to hit
30 or more home runs in a season at least fifteen times. In 1999, The
Sporting News ranked Aaron fifth on its "100 Greatest Baseball Players"
list.

Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina set a filibuster record
when he spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes in an attempt to kill
the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Thurmond died in his sleep on June
26, 2003, at 9:45 p.m. of heart failure at a hospital in Edgefield,
South Carolina. He was 100 years old. Thurmond was the longest-
serving senator in history.
