A GIFT IDEA FOR MOTHER’S DAY IN 1947

May include: A vintage advertisement for Whitman's Chocolates featuring a father holding a young boy on his shoulders, a young girl standing next to them, and a box of Whitman's Sampler chocolates. The text reads 'Mother's Day May II TH', 'HER DAY', 'HER FAMILY', 'HER CHOCOLATES', 'Whitman's CHOCOLATES', and 'A WOMAN NEVER FORGETS THE MAN WHO REMEMBERS'.

Whitman’s confections have been produced for over 175 years.

Originally a "confectionery and fruiterer shoppe" set up in 1842
by 19-year-old Stephen F. Whitman on the Philadelphia waterfront, Whitman’s first became popular with traveling sailors and their
wives.

They would often bring imported fruits, nuts, and cocoa which
were obtained during their voyages to Mr. Whitman so that he
could make the popular European
confections people craved
in that era.

AVOIDING MENTAL DULLNESS IN 1897

How to Avoid Mental Dullness, circa 1897 - by Ruth Reichl

The cereal, which contains neither grapes nor nuts, was
developed in 1897 by  C.W. Post, who was a patient
(and then a competitor), of Dr. John Harvey Kellogg.

It was one of the first commercial products marketed as
health food.

NEW CAKE TREAT WAS BORN ON THIS DAY

This Week In Illinois History: Birth Of The Twinkie (April 6, 1930) | Northern Public Radio: WNIJ and WNIU

In 1931 while looking for a way to keep his company’s shortcake-
baking machinery busy when strawberries are out of season,
manager James Dewar tried injecting one of the cakes with
cream filling. He dubbed his creation the
Twinkie.

FIRST ROCK CONCERT HELD ON THIS DAY

undefined

On March 21, 1952, Cleveland, Ohio hosted an event now
recognized as history’s first major rock-and-roll show…
the
Moondog Coronation Ball.

Breathless promotion on the local radio station. Tickets
selling out in a single day. Thousands of teenagers,
hours before show time, lining up outside the biggest
venue in town.

The scene outside the Cleveland Arena on a chilly Friday
night in March would look quite familiar to anyone who
has ever attended a major rock concert. But no one on
this particular night had  ever even heard of a “rock
concert” before.

The “Moondog” in question was the legendary disk jockey
Alan Freed, the self-styled “father of rock and roll” who
was then the host of the enormously popular “Moondog
Show” on Cleveland AM radio station WJW.
