MOVEMENT MEETS FOR THE FIRST TIME

File:Niagara Movement delegates, Boston, Mass., 1907.png ...

Niagara Movement members began meeting on the Canadian side of the
Niagara Falls on this day in 1905. This all-African American group of
scholars, lawyers and businessmen came together for three days to
create what would soon become a powerful
post-slavery Black rights
organization. Although it
only lasted five years, the Niagara Movement
was an influential
precursor to the civil rights movement of the mid-20th
century.

ORGANIZATION FOUNDED ON THIS DAY IN 1881

The LOC.GOV Wise Guide : She Was the 'Angel of the Battlefield'

In Washington, D.C., humanitarians Clara Barton  and Adolphus Solomons
founded the American National
Red Cross, an organization established to
provide humanitarian aid to victims of wars and natural disasters in
congruence with the International Red Cross.

Barton, born in Massachusetts in 1821, worked with the sick and wounded
during the
American Civil War and became known as the “Angel of the
Battlefield” for her tireless dedication. In 1865, President
Abraham
Lincoln
commissioned her to search for lost prisoners of war, and with
the extensive records she had compiled during the war she succeeded
in identifying thousands of the Union dead at the
Andersonville prisoner-
of-war camp.
