June 6, 1944 - D-Day: Invasion Of Europe – Past Daily: News, History, Music And An Enormous ...

On June 6, 1944, Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight
D. Eisenhower gave the go-ahead for the largest amphibious
military operation in history: Operation Overlord, the Allied
invasion of northern France, commonly known as
D-Day.

By daybreak, 18,000 British and American parachutists were
already on the ground. An additional 13,000 aircraft were
mobilized to provide air cover and support for the invasion. 

At 6:30 a.m., American troops came ashore at Utah and Omaha
beaches
.

This Day in History – June 5, 1968, Senator Robert F. Kennedy
was assassinated in the Ambassador Hotel by 24-year-old
Palestinian Sirhan Sirhan. He was shot in the head and died
early the next morning.

Timothy James McVeigh  (April 23, 1968 – June 11, 2001)

Timothy McVeigh, a former U.S. Army soldier, was convicted
on 15 counts of murder and conspiracy for his role in the
1995 terrorist bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building
in Oklahoma City.

On April 19, 1995, just after 9 a.m., a massive truck bomb
exploded outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.

The blast collapsed the north face of the nine-story building,
instantly killing more than 100 people and trapping dozens
more in the rubble. Emergency crews raced to Oklahoma City
from across the country, and when the rescue effort finally
ended two weeks later, the death toll stood at 168 people,
including 19 young children who were in the building’s day-
care center at the time of the blast.

VETERAN CHARACTER ACTOR HAS DIED

Actor John Beasley arrives to the premiere of Open Road Films' "A ...

Actor John Beasley, who played a kindly school bus driver
on the TV drama "Everwood" and appeared in dozens of
films dating back to the 1980s, died Tuesday after a "brief
and unexpected illness" at a hospital in his hometown of
Omaha.  

Beasley was born on June 26, 1943 in Omaha, Nebraska 
and started acting at the age of 44 after working with the 
railroad as a clerk. He was 79.

On May 28, 1998, the comedian and actor Phil Hartman, famous
for his work on Saturday Night Live and NewsRadio,was shot to
death by his wife, Brynn, in a murder-suicide. He was 49.
