SERIES DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1956

 

Indictment was a popular radio drama aired on the CBS network and it
started on January 29, 1956, airing up to 1959. This show was based
on the case files of former New York City Assistant District Attorney
Eleazer Lipsky. The subject of the show was the step-by-step account
of the handling of criminal cases leading to an indictment brought by
Assistant District Attorney Edward McCormick, played by Nat  Polen.

QUIZ SHOW DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1940

Beat the Band was a musical quiz show heard on NBC radio from 1940 to
1944 in two distinctly different series. The program popularized the catch
phrase
, "Give me a little traveling music”.

In the first series, broadcast on Sundays at 6:30pm from Chicago, host
Garry Moore read music-related questions submitted by listeners to band
members in the 14-piece Ted Weems Orchestra. Originally sponsored by
the General Mills cereal Kix, listeners whose questions were used on the
air received $10; those who stumped the band received $20 and a case
of Kix.

Kix cereal was introduced in 1937 by the General Mills company
of Golden Valley, Minnesota.

NEW LABEL RELEASE ON THIS DAY IN 1956

The song "Heartbreak Hotel" was Elvis Presley’s first on his new record label RCA
Victor
. It topped Billboard‘s Top 100 chart for seven weeks, Cashbox‘s pop singles
chart for six weeks, it was number one on the Country and Western chart for a total 
of seventeen weeks and reached number three on the R&B chart. The record was
Presley’s first million-seller, and one of the best-selling singles of 1956. Guitarist
Chet Atkins and pianist Floyd Cramer added their talents to the recording session.

DR. APPOINTED ON THIS DAY IN 1960


Janet Graeme Travell, M.D. (December 17, 1901 – August 1, 1997)

When John F. Kennedy won the Presidential race in 1960, he appointed 
Dr. Janet G. Travell as his personal physician. She was the first woman
appointed to the position. She continued to serve as Personal Physician
to the President following the assassination of Kennedy, with his successor
Lyndon B. Johnson through his re-election, but decided to leave the White
House in 1965.
