Adoline and her husband, Charles Carl Ceciliani who passed away in 1995,
built and operated Division Street Corral (“D-Street”) on Portland’s eastside
near 174th and Division. The popular dance hall, now a housing development,
had one of the largest dance floors in the country until 1979. Some of the live
music artists included Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, Roy Orbison, and Portland’s
own Heck Harper along with The Ventures and Paul Revere and the Raiders.

In 2006, Adoline sold the corral and moved out of the neighborhood she called
home for 63 years.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 18 at Lincoln Memorial.

RECORD LABEL DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1959

berry gordy
Record producer, and songwriter Berry Gordy, Jr.

Berry Gordy started Tamala Records, with an $800 loan
from his family along with royalties received from writing
for singer Jackie Wilson. He originally wanted to name
the new label “Tammy” Records, after the hit song by
Debbie Reynolds, but discovered it was already taken.

Tamala’s first release in 1959, in the Detroit area, was
”Come to Me” by Marv Johnson. It was released on the
United Artists label nationally. Tamala’s first hit was a
Barrett Strong number called “Money (That’s What I
Want)”, which went to number-two on the Billboard
R&B charts.
