A copy of the first edition

Winnie-the-Pooh is the first volume of stories about Winnie-the-Pooh,
by A. A. Milne. It is followed by The House at Pooh Corner. The book
focuses on the adventures of a teddy bear called Winnie-the-Pooh
and his friends Piglet, a small toy pig; Eeyore, a toy donkey; Owl, a
live owl; and Rabbit, a live rabbit. The characters of Kanga, a toy
kangaroo, and her son Roo are introduced later in the book, in the
chapter entitled "In Which Kanga and Baby Roo Come to the Forest
and Piglet has a Bath." The bouncy toy-tiger character of Tigger is
not introduced until the sequel, The House at Pooh Corner. Portions
of Winnie-the-Pooh were adapted from previously published magazine
stories.

Alan Alexander Milne (January 18, 1882 – January 31, 1956)

The long-running anthropology series Lux Radio Theatre, was broadcast
on the NBC Blue Network (1934-35); NBC (1935-54) and CBS (1954-55). At
first the series adapted Broadway plays during its first two seasons before
it began adapting films. These hour-long radio programs were performed
live before studio audiences. It became the most popular dramatic series 
on radio, broadcast for more than 20 years and continued on television as
the Lux Video Theatre through most of the 1950s.

The original host was the show’s fictional producer, Douglass
Garrick (portrayed by John J. Anthony shown above). Cecil B.
DeMille (below) took over as the host on June 1, 1936, until
January 22, 1945.

Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons was a 15-minute serial that was one of radio’s
longest running shows, from (October 12, 1937 to April 19, 1955). It aired on the
NBC Blue network until 1947, when it switched to CBS. The program was produced
by Frank and Anne Hummert. Mr. Keen and Mike Clancy were primarily homicide detectives. Bennett Kilpac (above) was the longest-running Mr. Keen; Philip Clarke
took over late in the run. and Jim Kelly was Mike Clancy. The series sponsors
included Whitehall Pharmacal Company, Dentyne, Aerowax, RCA Victor and
Chesterfield cigarettes.

       Henry John Heinz  (October 11, 1844 – May 14, 1919)

In 1869, businessman H.J. Heinz and partner L. Clarence Noble formed 
Heinz and Noble. The company operated out of the basement and first
floor of the Heinz’s former farmhouse, selling bottled horseradish. The
partners moved the business to Pittsburgh in 1872 and expanded
operations. In 1888, Heinz bought out his partners and re-named
the business H.J. Heinz Company, By the time the company was
incorporated in 1900, Heinz was already the country’s leading
manufacturer of ketchup, mustard, pickles, and vinegar.
