U.S. FLAG GETS 50th STAR ON THIS DAY IN 1959
GEORGE MCGOVERN IS 90 TODAY
George Stanley McGovern is a former U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator,
and the Democratic Party nominee in the 1972 presidential election.
He volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II and as a
B-24 Liberator pilot flew 35 missions over German-occupied Europe. He
was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for making a hazardous
emergency landing of his damaged plane and saving his crew.
After the war, McGovern obtained degrees from Dakota Wesleyan University
and Northwestern University, earning a Ph.D, becoming a history professor.

ANOTHER ASSASINATION ON THIS DAY IN 1968
Robert Francis "Bobby" Kennedy (November 20, 1925 – June 6, 1968)
Robert F. Kennedy speaks to campaign workers at the Ambassador
Hotel minutes before being shot.
Following a brief victory speech delivered just past midnight on Thursday,
June 5 at The Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, Kennedy was shot by
Sirhan Sirhan. Mortally wounded, he survived for nearly 26 hours, dying
early in the morning of June 6.

PRESIDENT BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1917
John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy (May 29, 1917 – November 22, 1963)
Often referred to by his initials JFK, Kennedy was the 35th President of
the United States, serving from 1961 until his assassination in 1963. He
was the youngest man elected President; and the youngest to die.
