It's been 50 years since Apollo 8 united a fractured world | CNN
Borman announced that the crew had a final message for
the people of Earth as each man took turns reading the 
first 10 verses of the book of Genesis from the Bible.

THE FIRST GAME WAS PLAYED ON THIS DAY

World's First Basketball Game, world record in Springfield, Massachusetts


On December 21, 1891, 30-year-old James Naismith (above) 
introduced the
first game of basketball. Based on 13 rules
created by Naismith
, the game was tested by 18 students at
the International Young Men’s Christian Association Training
School in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Two teams of nine players each compete against each other,
with the objective to throw a soccer ball into a peach basket
attached to a balcony 10 feet above the floor.

POPULAR MAGAZINE FIRST PUBLISHED

December 17 1892 | Vogue

On December 17, 1892, Arthur Baldwin Turnure first published
a
new magazine, dedicated to “the ceremonial side of life”
and targeted at “the sage as well as the debutante, men of
affairs as well as the belle.” 

As a product of the Gilded Age, Vogue has chronicled and
influenced high society, fashion and culture ever since.

Publisher Condé Nast purchased Vogue in 1905, changing it
to focus almost entirely on women and fashion and creating
the first of its international editions (there are now over 20).

The magazine has remained popular and relevant ever since,
regularly featuring the work of world-famous models, writers
and photographers.

The Daughters of the American Revolution, comprised of
women in the United States and around the world who
descend from patriots of the nation’s fight for it’s
independence, was
founded in Washington, D.C. on
this day in history, Oct. 11, 1890.

The    groups website says,The DAR "is a nonprofit, non-
political volunteer women’s service organization dedicated
to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and
securing America’s future through better education for
children."

The patriotic all-female organization devoted to ‘God, Home
and Country’ has 190,000 members worldwide.

NAVY SCHOOL WAS FOUNDED ON THIS DAY

The Naval School was founded in Annapolis, Maryland in the wake
of a shocking scandal at sea on this day in history, Oct. 10, 1845.

The renowned military institute was renamed the U.S. Naval
Academy
in 1850.

The school was established following the discovery of a planned
mutiny on the Atlantic Ocean aboard
U.S. Navy brig Somers.
