ON THIS DAY, 83 YEARS AGO
The Great Depression began with the crash of the Wall Street stock market
and had a severe worldwide economical effect in the decade preceding
World War ll. Unemployment in the U.S. rose to 25%, and in some countries
rose as high as 33%. The negative effect of the Great Depression lasted
until the end of the war.
STATUE DEDICATED ON THIS DAY IN 1886
Unveiling of the Statue of Liberty
A dedication ceremony for the Statue of Liberty was held on the afternoon of
Thursday, October 28, 1886. President Grover Cleveland, the former New York governor, presided over the event ,accepting the statue on behalf of the United
States. On the morning of the dedication, a parade was held in New York City;
estimates of the number of people who watched it ranged from several hundred thousand to a million. President Cleveland headed the procession. As the parade passed the New York Stock Exchange, traders threw ticker tape from the windows, beginning the New York tradition of… the ticker-tape parade.
