The global military conflict known as World War II, or the Second World War began
on September 1, 1939, with the invasion of Poland by Germany, and the subsequent declarations of war on Germany by France and most of the British Empire. It officially ended on September 2, 1945.

HISTORIC CONFIRMATION ON THIS DAY IN 1967
On June 13, 1967, President Johnson nominated Thurgood Marshall
to the Supreme Court (below) following the retirement of Justice Tom
C. Clark, saying that this was "the right thing to do, the right time to do
it, the right man and the right place." Marshall was confirmed as an
Associate Justice by a Senate vote of 69–11 on August 30, 1967. He
was the 96th person to hold the position, and also the first African
American. He served until October 1991.
LONGEST FILIBUSTER ENDED ON THIS DAY IN 1957
James Strom Thurmond (December 5, 1902 – June 26, 2003) served as a U.S.
Senator from South Carolina from 1954 until 2003, at first as a Democrat and
after 1964 as a Republican. On August 29, 1957 he concluded the longest
filibuster ever by a lone senator, in opposition to the Civil Rights Act of
1957. He held the floor, speaking nonstop for 24 hours and 18 minutes.

THE 50TH STATE ON THIS DAY IN 1959

Benjamin Harrison (August 20, 1833 – March 13, 1901)
President Harrison, In office from March 4, 1889 to March 4, 1893, was
born in North Bend, Ohio, and moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where he
eventually became a prominent politician. Harrison served as a Brigadier
General during the Civil War. After the war he unsuccessfully ran for
governor of Indiana, and was later appointed to the U.S. Senate. Harrison,
a Republican, was elected to the presidency in 1888, defeating Democratic
incumbent Grover Cleveland.
