CROSSOVER BLACK ARTIST BORN IN 1932
Little Richard (Richard Wayne Penniman)
(December 5, 1932 – May 9, 2020)
Singer, pianist, and songwriter Little Richard was an influential
figure in popular music and culture for seven decades. He is
described as the "Architect of Rock and Roll."
Little Richard was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
as part of its first group of inductees in 1986.
After a two-month illness, Richard died at the age of 87 at his
home in Tullahoma, Tennessee, from a cause related to bone
cancer.

THEY NEVER RETURNED ON THIS DAY IN 1945
At 2:10 p.m. on December 5, 1945, five U.S. Navy Avenger
torpedo-bombers comprising Flight 19 took off from the
Ft. Lauderdale Naval Air Station in Florida on a routine
three-hour training mission. After having completed their
objective, Flight 19 was scheduled to take them due east
for an additional 67 miles, then turn north for 73 miles,
and back to the air station after that, totaling a distance
of 120 miles. They never returned.

HOSTAGE FREED IN LEBANON ON THIS DAY
On December 4, 1991, Islamic militants in Lebanon released
kidnapped American journalist Terry Anderson after 2,454
days in captivity.
As chief Middle East correspondent for the Associated Press,
Anderson covered the long-running civil war in Lebanon,1975-
1990. On March 16, 1985, he was kidnapped on a west Beirut
street while leaving a tennis court.
His captors took him to the southern suburbs of the city, where
he was held prisoner in an underground dungeon for the next
six-and-a-half years.
