Danish carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen
(7 April 1891 – 11 March 1958)

In 1932, Ole founded the construction toy company The Lego
Group. He toiled away in Billund, Denmark, for decades before
creating Leg Godt, which means “play well.” His workshop was destroyed by fire twice. He endured bankruptcy and a world war
that caused a shortage of materials.

Finally, in the late 1940s, Ole Christiansen landed on the idea for
self-locking plastic bricks. By the time Ole Kirk died in 1958,
Legos was on the verge of becoming a household word.

On September 2, 1969, America’s first automatic teller
machine (ATM) makes its public debut, dispensing
cash to customers at Chemical Bank in Rockville
Centre, New York. ATMs went on to revolutionize the
banking industry, eliminating the need to visit a bank
to conduct basic financial transactions.  

By the 1980s, these money machines had become
widely popular and handled many of the functions
previously performed by human tellers, such as
check deposits and  money transfers between
accounts. 

Today, ATMs are as indispensable to most people
as cell phones and e-mail.

Donald C. Wetzel (93) is an American businessman known
for holding the USA patent to the automatic teller machine.

Royal Crown Cola is a brand of cola invented by pharmacist Claud
A. Hatcher of Columbus, Georgia in 1905 and was originally created
for Cole-Hampton-Hatcher Grocery Store as an early generic brand,
to avoid the high cost of purchasing Coca-Cola syrup.

RC Cola is owned and distributed in the U.S. by Keurig Dr Pepper.
In the rest of the world, it is distributed by RC Cola International.

Claud Adkins Hatcher
(August 20, 1876 – December 31, 1933)

On April 30, 1993, four years after publishing a proposal for “an
idea of linked information systems,” British computer scientist
Tim Berners-Lee (above) released the source code for the world’s
first web browser and editor. Originally called Mesh, the browser
that he dubbed WorldWideWeb became the first royalty-free, easy
-to-use means of browsing the emerging information network that developed into the internet as we know it today.

The World Wide Web’s inventor sold it’s original code for $5.4
Million. He will be 66years old June 8th.

On March 7, 1876, 29-year-old Alexander Graham Bell received a
patent for his revolutionary new invention: the telephone.

The Scottish-born Bell worked in London with his father, Melville
Bell, who developed Visible Speech, a written system used to
teach speaking to the deaf. In the 1870s, the Bells moved to
Boston, Massachusetts, where the younger Bell found work as
a teacher at the Pemberton Avenue School for the Deaf. He later
married one of his students, Mabel Hubbard.

While in Boston, Bell became very interested in the possibility of transmitting speech over wires. Samuel F.B. Morse’s invention
of the telegraph in 1843 had made nearly instantaneous
communication possible between two distant points.

With the help of Thomas A. Watson, a Boston machine shop
employee, Bell developed a prototype.
