Actress, director, and producer Jodie Foster has received
two
Academy Awards, three British Academy Film Awards,
two
Golden Globe Awards, and the Cecil B. DeMille Award
along with a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for
her work as a director.

Foster began her professional career as a child model when
she was three years old, and she made her acting debut in
1968 in the television sitcom Mayberry R.F.D. In the late
1960s and early 1970s (below).

On this day in 1947, Howard Hughes flew his "Spruce Goose," a
huge wooden airplane, for eight minutes in California
. It was the
plane’s first and only flight. The "Spruce Goose," nicknamed
because of the white-gray color of the spruce used to build it,
never went into production.

forces to blockade Cuba. The blockade was in response to the
discovery of Soviet missile bases on the island.

Jolson. The film was based on the short story "The Day of Atonement"
by Sampson Raphaelson. It is the first feature-length motion picture
with not only a synchronized recorded music score but also lip-
synchronous singing and speech in several isolated sequences

On this day in 1962, Johnny Carson began hosting the “Tonight”
show on NBC television. He was introduced by Groucho Marx
(left) who warmed up the audience with a 15-minute monologue.

Jack Paar was the previous host of the show. Carson stayed with
the late night talk show for nearly 30 years.
